Colored Pencil Painting Portraits by Alyona Nickelsen

Alyona Nickelsen has written and illustrated a book that is not only informative, but beautiful.  When I opened the book, I have to be honest, I simply could not believe that the pictures I was looking at were done in colored pencil.  They are exquisite!

However, she does an amazing job in sharing what she knows, as an artist, with complete instructions and tips on achieving the results for the reader.  She takes the r4eader step by step, illustrating each of those steps to help achieve the desired results.

I realized very quickly that I was not ready for this book.  I was simply too new in using colored pencils for art, and certainly not ready to do portraits. As a result, I purchased her previous book, the Colored Pencil Painting Bible and am now actively engrossed in creating my own paintings with colored pencils.

I hope to “graduate” and dive into Colored Pencil Painting Portraits.  Meanwhile I do use it to help guide me in my work.

When I first started playing with various artistic mediums, watercolor pencils became by favorite tool.  I quickly realized that with pencils I could create interesting results, actually much easier than with a paint brush.

I am excited about the possibilities I have discovered in this book.
